Activity Life Skills

Moon Mail Delivery

Plan a rover route and deliver three parcels across the moon.

Your mission

Draw a moon map, match three parcels to their houses, reroute around craters, and finish every delivery in order.

Safety note

Use large paper pieces and an age-appropriate toy vehicle on a clear floor. Keep small loose parts away from children who may place them in their mouth.

Materials needed

  • Large paper
  • Washable crayons
  • Toy vehicle

Your play plan

0 of 4 complete

  1. Two children draw routes among three moon houses and paper craters.

    Step 1

    Build the Moon Map

Draw three colorful moon houses and two craters, connect them with routes, and place the rover at its launch point.

β€œWhere will the houses, craters, and launch point go?”
    Grown-up tip

Help secure the paper if needed, but let the child decide the map layout.

  2. A child guides a toy moon rover carrying a parcel toward a matching dome house.

    Step 2

    Deliver the First Parcel

Make three colored paper parcels, match the first parcel to its house, and drive the rover along the route.

β€œWhich house matches this parcel, and how will the rover get there?”
    Grown-up tip

Invite the child to point out the route before moving the vehicle.

  3. Two children draw a new rover route around a large pretend moon crater.

    Step 3

    Reroute Around a Crater

Add a crater across the next route, draw a safe new path around it, and complete the second delivery.

β€œHow can the rover reach the house without crossing the crater?”
    Grown-up tip

Encourage more than one route idea and ask why the chosen route is safe.

  4. Children celebrate after a toy rover delivers parcels to three moon houses.

    Step 4

    Finish the Moon Mail Run

Deliver all three parcels in the chosen order, then invent one new safe moon hazard and explain the final route.

β€œWhat new moon hazard will your rover solve on the final trip?”

    Grown-up tip

Let the child choose a paper obstacle that keeps the play physically safe.

Skills children practise

Practise route planning, matching, sequencing, spatial language, flexible problem solving, and imaginative storytelling.

  • βœ“ Sequencing
  • βœ“ Problem solving
  • βœ“ Spatial reasoning
  • βœ“ Creativity

Easier version

Use two nearby houses, one crater, and matching parcel colors with the route visible.

Harder version

Add another safe obstacle, require a delivery order, and ask the navigator to describe the route before moving the rover.

For parents

Let the child draw and revise the route. Use words such as around, between, before, and next while allowing multiple safe solutions.

For teachers

Use pairs with navigator and rover-driver roles, then switch roles for the final delivery. Ask children to explain route changes.
